copycon roundup #2 - when is being mediocre good enough?

In the next instalment of my “best bits” of #CopyConx we have the fabulous Lorraine Forrest-Turner and THAT pink suit, which was as much of a conversation piece as the talk itself.

Lorraine was telling us why it’s ok to be mediocre, and it was a bit of a game-changer if I’m honest.

As copywriters we tend to be a teeeeensy bit obsessed with perfection. If you’ve never agonised over a comma, spent ages deliberating sentence structure or spent far too long thumbing through a thesaurus for the perfect word, you’re probably not a copywriter. But sometimes that perfectionism acts as a chokehold on our creativity. We want the first draft to be as close to 100% as possible. We stick with the tried and tested rather than take risks. We drive ourselves mad obsessing over messaging when sometimes, IT’S FINE AS IT BLOODY IS!

Knowing when to step away from the keyboard is just as important as stepping up to it.

Don’t let that bit of text torture you, it’s just words!

Let go of fear, it will actually propel you forwards.

What looks mediocre to you can actually look pretty fucking amazing to other people!

Thanks Lorraine Forrest-Turner and your pink suit for an inspirational talk on why good enough often really is just that.
